چکیده

This paper presents structural recursion as the basis of the syntax and semantics of query languages for semistructured data and XML. We describe a simple and powerful query language based on pattern matching and show that it can be expressed using structural recursion, which is introduced as a top-down, recursive function, similar to the way XSL is deened on XML trees. On cyclic data, structural recursion can be deened in two equivalent ways: as a recursive function which evaluates the data top-down and remembers all its calls to avoid innnite loops, or as a bulk evaluation which processes the entire data in parallel using only traditional relational algebra operators. The latter makes it possible for optimization techniques in relational queries to be applied to structural recursion. We show that the composition of two structural recursion queries can be expressed as a single such query, and this is used as the basis of an optimization method for mediator systems. Several other formal properties are established: structural recursion can be expressed in rst order logic extended with transitive closure; its data complexity is PTIME; and over relational data it is a conservative extension of the relational calculus. The underlying data model is based on value equality, formally deened with bisimulation. Structural recursion is shown to be invariant with respect to value equality.

Iteration Algebras for UnQL Graphs and Completeness for Bisimulation

This paper shows an application of Bloom and Ésik’s iteration algebras to model graph data in a graph database query language. About twenty years ago, Buneman et al. developed a graph database query language UnQL on the top of a functional meta-language UnCAL for describing and manipulating graphs. Recently, the functional programming community has shown renewed interest in UnCAL, because it pr...

Entry Entry Entry Movie Movie TV Show

For certain database tasks that require great exibility, some people are turning to a new kind of data representation in which the database is not constrained by a schema. Instead, each component of the database carries its own description, which is independent of other components. Systems like ACeDB, which has become very popular with biologists, and the recent Tsimmis proposal for data integr...

Entry Entry Entry

A new kind of data model has recently emerged in which the database is not constrained by a conventional schema. Systems like ACeDB, which has become very popular with biologists, and the recent Tsimmis proposal for data integration organize data in tree-like structures whose components can be used equally well to represent sets and tuples. Such structures allow great exibility in data represen...

The XML Query Language Xcerpt: Design Principles, Examples, and Semantics

Most query and transformation languages developed since the mid 90es for XML and semistructured data – e.g. XQuery [1], the precursors of XQuery [2], and XSLT [3] – build upon a path-oriented node selection: A node in a data item is specified in terms of a root-to-node path in the manner of the file selection languages of operating systems. Constructs inspired from the regular expression constr...

Using Nested Tables for Representing and Querying Semistructured Web Data

This paper proposes an approach for representing and querying semistructured Web data, which is based on nested tables allowing internal nested structural variations. Our motivation is to reduce the complexity found in typical query languages for semistructured data and to provide users with an alternative for quickly querying data obtained from multiple-record Web pages. We show the feasibilit...
